What makes a modular belt different
A modular belt is built from interlocking moulded plastic modules joined by hinge rods, much like a chain that is as wide as the conveyor. Sprockets engage the underside of the belt directly, so the drive is positive. The belt cannot slip and does not need tracking, even on short, wide conveyors where a fabric belt would wander.
Because the belt is made of modules, a damaged section can be replaced in minutes without changing the whole belt. Open-grid modules let water, oil and crumbs fall through, and the belt can be cleaned in place. Side-flexing modules turn corners without a transfer, and flighted modules lift product up an incline. Is a modular belt better than a PVC belt?
Not always. A PVC belt is cheaper and gives a smooth, continuous surface for cartons and small packs. A modular belt costs more but drives positively, does not need tracking, handles wet, oily, sharp or warm product, and can be repaired section by section. The right choice depends on your product and cleaning routine.
Can a modular belt conveyor go round a curve?
Yes. Side-flexing modular belts turn through 90 or 180 degrees in one continuous run, so product does not need a transfer plate or second conveyor at the bend. The inside radius depends on belt width and module type, so share your layout and we will check it.
How is a damaged modular belt repaired?
Pull out the hinge rods either side of the damaged modules, replace the modules, and refit the rods. It is usually a short job done on site with simple tools, and only the damaged section is replaced. We can supply spare modules and rods to suit the belt on your conveyor.
Are modular belts suitable for food contact?
Food-grade modular belts are made in materials such as polypropylene and acetal that are commonly used for food contact. Tell us the product, temperature and cleaning chemicals, and we will propose a suitable belt material and frame for your hygiene requirements.
