What a switch mode power supply does
A switch mode power supply converts AC mains (or a DC source) into a regulated DC output, such as 5 V, 12 V, 24 V or 48 V, for low-voltage equipment. Instead of a large 50 Hz transformer, an SMPS rectifies the input and switches it at a high frequency. That lets it use a much smaller high-frequency transformer and lighter filter components.
The result is a compact, efficient supply: typical industrial SMPS units run at 85 to 95 percent efficiency, compared with roughly 50 to 60 percent for a linear supply doing the same job. Less heat means smaller panels, cooler cabinets and lower running cost. The trade-off is more internal components and some high-frequency noise, which good designs control with input filtering and EMC compliance.
Industrial SMPS units are protected against overload and short circuit. Many use a constant-current (U/I) characteristic that limits output to around 1.1 to 1.5 times nominal current while holding the voltage, so a fault does not take the supply down and there is enough reserve current to trip a downstream breaker.

How to choose a switch mode power supply
Use these points to shortlist an SMPS before you send an enquiry.
| Parameter | What to check |
|---|---|
| Input voltage | Single-phase 230 V AC, wide-range 85–264 V AC, or three-phase 400/415 V AC for higher-power units |
| Output voltage | Match the load: 24 V DC is standard for automation; 5, 12 and 48 V for electronics and telecom |
| Output current and wattage | Add up the load and allow about 20–30 percent headroom, plus inrush for motors, solenoids and lamps |
| Ambient temperature | Check the derating curve; many units lose output above about 50–60 °C inside a panel |
| Protection | Short-circuit, overload, over-voltage and over-temperature protection; constant-current vs hiccup mode |
| Hold-up time | How long the output survives a mains dip; add a DC-UPS or buffer module for critical loads |
| Redundancy | Parallel or N+1 operation with a redundancy module where downtime is costly |
| Mounting and size | DIN rail, chassis or enclosed; check panel width and ventilation clearance |

What is the difference between an SMPS and a linear power supply?
A linear supply uses a 50 Hz transformer and drops excess voltage as heat, so it is heavy and usually 50–60 percent efficient, but very quiet electrically. An SMPS switches at high frequency, so it is smaller, lighter and typically 85–95 percent efficient. For control panels and most industrial loads, an SMPS is the practical choice; linear supplies remain useful for very low-noise analogue circuits.
Are switch mode power supplies safe for industrial use?
Yes, when they are selected and installed correctly. Industrial SMPS units include short-circuit, overload, over-voltage and over-temperature protection, and comply with electrical safety and EMC standards. Use the correct input protection, keep ventilation clearances, respect the temperature derating and earth the unit properly. A constant-current overload characteristic also helps trip downstream breakers without shutting the supply down.
How do I size an SMPS for my control panel?
Add the steady-state current of every 24 V load: PLC, I/O modules, sensors, relays and HMI. Then allow for inrush from coils, lamps and capacitive loads, and keep 20–30 percent headroom. Check the derating curve for your panel temperature. If the total is large or uptime matters, consider two supplies in parallel with a redundancy module, or a DC-UPS.
Can I replace a failed SMPS with a different brand?
Usually, yes. Match the input range, output voltage, current rating, mounting and physical size, and check whether the old unit had special features such as a DC-OK relay contact, remote sense or parallel operation. Send us the model number or a photo of the label and we can suggest equivalent options.
Why does my SMPS output drop or cut out?
Common causes are overload or a short circuit on the output, high panel temperature pushing the unit into derating or thermal shutdown, input voltage outside its range, or ageing electrolytic capacitors in an older supply. Measure the load current and input voltage, check ventilation, and replace supplies that have run hot for years.
Do you supply SMPS units outside Mumbai?
