Overview

Instruments for electrical, electronic and field testing

Reliable measurement is the starting point of safe electrical work, fast fault-finding and consistent product quality. Our test and measurement instruments in Mumbai cover the full range from the electrician's toolbox to the electronics lab bench.

For electrical installation and maintenance we offer digital multimeters, clamp meters, voltage detectors, insulation resistance testers, multifunction installation testers, wire tracers and earth testers. For electronics design, production and repair there are bench multimeters, LCR meters, oscilloscopes, function and arbitrary waveform generators and programmable DC power supplies. For plant and building maintenance we also list thermal imagers, infrared thermometers, environmental meters, pressure calibrators and, from RIDGID, pipe threading machines and drain cleaning equipment.

Tell us what you need to measure and the environment you work in, and we will suggest suitable models and send a quotation.

Buyer's guide

How to choose a test instrument

Define the measurement. List the quantities you need (AC and DC voltage, current, resistance, insulation, capacitance, frequency, temperature) and the ranges. A meter that is right for panel maintenance may lack the resolution needed for electronics work, and the reverse.

Check the safety rating. For electrical work, the measurement category (CAT II, CAT III or CAT IV) and voltage rating must match the point in the installation where you will measure. Higher categories are needed closer to the supply source, such as distribution boards and incoming feeders. Test leads should carry the same rating.

Choose true-RMS where loads are non-linear. Drives, SMPS and LED lighting distort waveforms. An average-responding meter can read these incorrectly; a true-RMS meter gives a more accurate reading.

Handheld or bench? Handheld instruments suit field service and maintenance rounds. Bench instruments give higher resolution, more digits, remote interfaces and dual displays, which suit labs, production testing and calibration.

For oscilloscopes, compare bandwidth, sample rate, channel count and memory depth with the fastest signals you need to see. For LCR meters, check test frequency range and basic accuracy for your components.

Plan for calibration. Every instrument drifts over time. Regulated industries and quality systems usually require periodic calibration, so factor it into your maintenance schedule.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still have a question? Call +91 90433 36700 or send an enquiry.

Do I need a true-RMS multimeter?

If you measure circuits with drives, SMPS, LED lighting, UPS systems or other non-linear loads, yes. These loads distort the waveform, and an average-responding meter can give misleading readings. A true-RMS meter measures the effective value of the actual waveform, so readings are more accurate on modern installations.

What do CAT II, CAT III and CAT IV mean on a meter?

They are measurement categories that describe the transient overvoltage a meter can safely withstand at different points in an electrical installation. CAT II covers plug-in loads, CAT III covers distribution boards and fixed installations, and CAT IV covers the supply origin such as service entrances and outdoor feeders. Choose a meter and leads rated for the highest category you will work on.

How often should a multimeter or tester be calibrated?

Many quality systems specify calibration once a year, but the right interval depends on how often the instrument is used, the conditions it works in and the accuracy you rely on. Calibrate sooner if the instrument has been dropped, overloaded or gives readings you doubt.

What is the difference between an LCR meter and a multimeter?

A multimeter measures voltage, current and resistance, and some models measure capacitance at a basic level. An LCR meter measures inductance, capacitance and resistance as impedance at a chosen AC test frequency, with much better accuracy and extra parameters such as quality factor and dissipation factor, which matter when testing components.

How do I choose oscilloscope bandwidth?

A common rule of thumb is to choose a bandwidth at least three to five times the highest frequency component of the signal you need to view accurately. For digital signals, consider the rise time rather than just the clock frequency. Also compare sample rate, memory depth and the number of channels.

Can I get a quote for several instruments from different brands?

Yes. Send one enquiry listing all the models or requirements, for example a set of multimeters, clamp meters and insulation testers for a maintenance team. We will reply with a combined quotation and suggest alternatives where a model is not available.
