How an air atomizing nozzle works
Atomization is the break-up of a liquid into droplets, measured in microns. In a standard hydraulic nozzle, all the energy for atomization comes from liquid pressure: the liquid is broken up by impact on a surface or by swirling through a shaped orifice. To get finer drops you have to raise the pressure.
An air atomizing nozzle (also called a twin-fluid or two-fluid nozzle) uses pressurised air or gas to strike the liquid stream and shear it into a fine spray. Because the air supplies the energy, very fine, low-volume sprays can be produced at low liquid pressure, and the liquid can be pressure-fed or siphon/gravity-fed.
Adjusting the air and liquid pressures lets you tune drop size and flow on site. That flexibility is why process engineers choose air atomizing nozzles where fine, controlled sprays matter.
Internal mix vs external mix air atomizing nozzles
| Feature | Internal mix | External mix |
|---|---|---|
| Where air meets liquid | Inside the nozzle body | Outside the nozzle, at the air cap |
| Atomization | Finest drops | Fine, slightly coarser than internal mix |
| Air and liquid control | Linked: changing air pressure changes liquid flow | Independent: air and liquid set separately |
| Viscous liquids | Less suitable | Better suited |
| Spray patterns | Full cone, hollow cone, flat | Full cone (round) and flat |
| Typical uses | Humidification, cooling, fogging | Coatings, paints, viscous chemicals |
Air atomizing nozzle range
Our range covers the common internal and external mix designs. Air caps and liquid caps are interchangeable, so one body can be configured for different flows and patterns.
External mixture flat fan air atomizing nozzle
Flat spray with independent control of air and liquid. Suits coating conveyors, moistening and spraying on moving products.
| Mixing | External |
|---|---|
| Pattern | Flat fan |
| Construction | Stainless steel |
External mixture narrow jet air atomizing nozzle
Narrow round spray for targeted application, including more viscous liquids.
| Mixing | External |
|---|---|
| Pattern | Narrow round |
| Construction | Stainless steel |
Internal mixture siphon flat fan air atomizing nozzle
Draws liquid by siphon from a container below the nozzle, so no liquid pump is needed. Useful for lubrication and light coating.
| Mixing | Internal |
|---|---|
| Feed | Siphon / gravity |
| Pattern | Flat fan |
Internal mixture wide angle air atomizing nozzle
Wide round spray with very fine drops for humidification, cooling and covering larger areas.

Internal mixture jet air atomizing nozzle
Round jet with fine atomization for gas cooling, misting and fogging.

Where air atomizing nozzles are used
Chemical process engineering
Chemical injection, material injection and desulphurising, where controlled fine drops improve reaction and mixing.
Pharmaceutical tablet coating
Even coating films with fine, repeatable droplets in coating pans.
Gas cooling
Fine drops evaporate quickly to cool hot gases before filters and ducts.
Humidification and fogging
Humidity control in textile, paper, printing and storage areas, and special fogging effects.
Coating and lubrication
Release agents, oils and coatings applied thinly and evenly with less waste.
Washing, quenching and dust control
Rinsing, wetting and cooling parts, and fine-spray dust suppression.
Why choose air atomizing nozzles
Air atomizing nozzles are fully adjustable: by changing air and liquid pressure you can move from a fine fog to a heavier spray without changing the nozzle. They maximise liquid dispersion and minimise liquid consumption, which matters when the liquid is costly or must not over-wet the product.
Our nozzles are compact, with all stainless steel construction for durability and corrosion resistance, and interchangeable air and liquid caps. Drop size depends on the liquid's surface tension, viscosity and density, as well as the air-to-liquid ratio, so tell us what you are spraying when you enquire.
Keep the compressed air clean and dry, and filter the liquid line. Most performance problems come from blocked caps or wet, oily air rather than from the nozzle itself.

What is an air atomizing nozzle?
An air atomizing nozzle combines compressed air and liquid to produce a fine spray. The air stream breaks the liquid into small droplets, so the nozzle can create a fine mist even at low liquid pressure. It is also called a twin-fluid or two-fluid nozzle and is used for coating, humidification, gas cooling and chemical injection.
What is the difference between internal mix and external mix?
In an internal mix nozzle the air and liquid mix inside the body, giving the finest drops, but air pressure also affects liquid flow. In an external mix nozzle they meet outside the nozzle, so air and liquid can be controlled separately and thicker liquids can be sprayed, with slightly coarser atomization.
Can an air atomizing nozzle work without a liquid pump?
Yes. Siphon and gravity-fed designs draw liquid from a container using the vacuum created by the air flow, or use the head of liquid above the nozzle. This is useful for low flows such as lubrication or light coating. For higher flows or long pipe runs, a pressure-fed setup gives more stable control.
What affects droplet size in air atomizing nozzles?
The main factors are the air-to-liquid ratio, air pressure, liquid flow rate and the liquid's surface tension, viscosity and density. More air relative to liquid gives finer droplets. Nozzle design, cap size and whether the nozzle is internal or external mix also make a significant difference.
Can you customise air atomizing nozzles?
Yes. Air atomizing nozzles can be customised to your liquid, flow, spray pattern and mounting. Share the process details and any existing nozzle part numbers, and we will suggest a standard model or a custom build.
